Masterclass: Film Law
With Andrés Jaramillo Gallego and Nicolás van Hemelryck
Online · JULY 25, 2026 · 10:00-13:00 Colombia Time
Understanding how the legal and financial system of Colombian cinema works should not be the privilege of a few. That’s why this Masterclass exists: to explain clearly, without detours and with complete honesty, how the system really works, what helps, what doesn’t, and how to navigate it all without losing your way.
In three hours, Andrés Jaramillo Gallego and Nicolás van Hemelryck explain from the inside how a production is legally structured, how Law 814 of 2003 works, and how a film’s business model is built in Colombia. Andrés, from a deep knowledge of the law, with more than a decade accompanying audiovisual projects as legal advisor. Nicolás, from real-world implementation, having produced feature films that have circulated through the world’s most important festivals, all built on a financing base that combines a range of funding sources.
What will we cover?
Copyright in cinema
What is protected, who holds the rights to what, and which contracts are fundamental in any audiovisual production: assignment, license, co-production. How to avoid the most common mistakes that can cost a production dearly.
Law 814 of 2003
How the Film Law works, what tax incentives exist, how film investment certificates are used, and what requirements must be met to access the benefits. No loose acronyms or fine print.
The business model
How a film is financed in Colombia, what the public and private sources are, how revenue is distributed across box office, platforms, and international markets, and what the sector’s real challenges are today.
Economic impact and case studies
How Law 814 has transformed Colombian audiovisual production: production figures, jobs created, and sector growth. A presentation of successful cases of Colombian films that have made good use of the system.
Personalized consulting
Work on your project directly with the experts
In addition to the Masterclass, we offer a limited number of individual 90-minute consulting sessions. A space designed for those who want to apply what they’ve learned directly to their project, and work through their specific doubts and situation.
In each session, Andrés and Nicolás sit down with you to review the specific questions of your case, for example: the legal structure of your production, doubts about contracts, co-production, access to funds, Film Law strategy, or any aspect of the business model that isn’t clear to you. It is not a class. It is real consulting with two experts who know the system from the inside.

The instructors
Andrés Jaramillo Gallego
A lawyer specialized in Copyright, Intellectual Property, and Contract Law, and one of the most authoritative voices on the legal framework of Colombian cinema. Founding partner of LEM S.A.S. and JGA Abogados, for over a decade he has advised numerous Colombian films and production companies, among them Casatarántula, with whom he has worked jointly for more than 10 years, accompanying projects that have reached the world’s most important festivals.
He has been an advisor and workshop leader for Proimágenes Colombia since 2013 in the #TengoUnaPelícula program, and a lecturer in the legal structuring of international co-productions at the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba). He is the author of the publications “Cultura al Derecho” (Ministry of Culture, 2014) and “Cine al Derecho” (Medellín Film Commission, 2019), key references for filmmakers who want to understand the sector’s legal system.
As a producer, he premiered the feature documentary LA FORTALEZA at FICCI 2020, which gives him a unique perspective: he knows the law both from inside and outside the screen.
Nicolás van Hemelryck
A Colombian filmmaker, producer, and cinematographer whose work has conquered the world’s most important festivals. His film ALIS (2022) won 30 international awards, including the Crystal Bear and the Teddy Award at the Berlinale. His debut AMAZONA competed at IDFA and was nominated for the Goya for Best Ibero-American Film.
Co-founder of Casatarántula, PI, and DOCCO, he has built from Colombia a career of co-productions with Romania, Chile, France, the USA, Scotland, Mexico, Spain, Cuba, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Portugal, and Brazil. His films have been financed through two fronts: international funds such as Sundance, Tribeca, Ibermedia, and IDFA Bertha Fund, and the instruments of Colombia’s Film Law — donations, investments, and the FDC — becoming a reference point for how to take advantage of these mechanisms to make independent cinema with global reach. He is currently developing his first fiction feature, EL DORADO, a co-production with Romania, Spain, Portugal, and Denmark, together with Clare Weiskopf.
Who is it for?
For directors, producers, accountants, and anyone in the audiovisual sector who wants to understand how the legal and financial system of Colombian cinema works and apply it to their own project. It doesn’t matter what stage you are at or whether you have already tried to navigate the system before. This Masterclass starts from scratch and explains everything clearly.
